Famous Cities of the World: Mumbai

Mumbai is located south of the tropic of Cancer but north of the equator and has small seasonal temperature fluctuations. In January the average low temperature is 19C (67 F) and the average high temperature is 30C (85 F); in May the average low temperature is 27C (81 F) and the average high temperature is 33C (92 F). Mumbai is a cluster of seven islands. These islands of no great value were ceded to Portuguese in 1534 by the Sultan of Gujarat. Mumbai is responsible for half of India. With a major population following Hinduism Mumbai is the place to be at to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi.

Mumbai is a commercial and financial capital of India. It is one of most populous metropolitan cities in India. Mumbai is also one of the few cities in the world that accommodates a national park, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, within its city limits. Mumbai is a city that you love or hate, and I happen to love this place.

Mumbai is actually built on an island off the west coast of Maharashtra. Tourists, resorts, restaurants and Mumbai Hotels are more common to the south of the island with the commercial district located in the North. Mumbai is the shopping capital of India. The area around Colaba has some of the better department stores, as well as smaller shops selling electronics and music soundtracks from local films.

Mumbai is the stronghold of the Indian film industry. Throughout the year Western and Indian music concerts and festivals and Indian dance shows are performed in Bombay. Mumbai is also the country's financial powerhouse, the nation's industrial heartland, and its economic nerve centre. Dazzling shopping arcades, exciting sport activity, night clubs and discotheques, theatre and music, gourmet restaurants and interesting sightseeing - Mumbai offers the visitor a heady mix of all this and more. Mumbai is the bustling, commercial capital of India and home to some of the country's most important banking and financial institutions, industrial houses and large corporate headquarters. In addition, Mumbai is a major port with years of maritime history, and many well developed shipping-related businesses are based here.

Mumbai is often described as "Dariya" or an ocean in Indian lore as it is home to gaudiest of stars and penniless refugees who flock in search of a livelihood. Mumbai's got it all -- the glamour, largest of slums, largest of red-light districts, tallest sky-scrappers, busiest trains, the crowds, the money. Mumbai is a horizontal place. It grew from a set of seven interlocking islands that served as a series of seaports and trading ports.
